Scouting around in Bodmin for more than 100 years

The 3rd Bodmin Scout Group has been part of the community in Bodmin for more than one hundred years, working with the town council and community groups to benefit Bodmin’s youth. It’s the board of trustees and excellent team of volunteers who ensure the group continues.

Approximately 120 members make up the different age range sections, with two Beaver Colonies (6 to 8) on Wednesdays and Fridays, a Cub Pack (8 to 11) on Thursdays, a Scout Troop (11 to 14) on Fridays, an Explorer Unit (14 to 18) on Tuesdays and the latest addition, Squirrel Drey (4 to 6) on Mondays.

Life skills are learned through a wide variety of exciting activities and the importance of being a good

citizen is promoted. Archery, air rifle shooting, tomahawk throwing, climbing and judo are on offer through the group’s own trained instructors while other activities are outsourced. Annually, there’s hiking, trips, camps and other land and water-based sporting events.

David Illsley, lead volunteer, told Bodmin Life: “Members in 2023 enjoyed a cinema trip, Plymouth’s Theatre Royal pantomime, factory tours, the Ski Centre in Plymouth and a huge Christmas party.”
